Nworgu Makes History As Nigeria Claims First Glasgow 2026 Gold

Nigeria’s Esther Nworgu has delivered the country’s first gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after an outstanding performance in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event.

Nworgu dominated the competition with a top lift of 123kg, scoring 119 points to secure the gold medal while also breaking the Commonwealth Games record twice during her impressive outing.

The Nigerian athlete’s victory marked a historic moment for Team Nigeria at the Games, as she became the first Nigerian gold medallist of the Glasgow 2026 edition.

Her triumph was made even more memorable by Nigeria’s strong showing in the event, as fellow Nigerian Esther Oyema claimed the silver medal to complete a one two finish for the country in the women’s lightweight category.

England’s Olivia Broome settled for the bronze medal as Nworgu and Oyema led the podium in a dominant display by Nigeria’s para powerlifters.

The achievement adds another major milestone to Nworgu’s career, having previously represented Nigeria at global competitions, including the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games where she won a silver medal.

Nigeria’s success in para powerlifting continues the country’s long tradition of excellence in the sport, with Nigerian athletes regularly competing among the world’s best and producing medal winning performances at major international events.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which began on July 23 and run until August 2, feature para powerlifting among the opening medal events, highlighting the growing importance of para sports on the Commonwealth stage.

Nworgu’s record breaking gold has given Team Nigeria an early boost at the competition and raised hopes of more medals as the Games continue.
