Nigeria Makes 3×3 Basketball History At Glasgow 2026

Nigeria’s 3×3 basketball team has recorded a historic milestone at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after securing the country’s first ever victory in the fast growing basketball format.
Team Nigeria defeated the Cayman Islands 21 17 in a thrilling encounter, marking a significant breakthrough for the country in the Commonwealth Games 3×3 basketball competition.
The victory represented Nigeria’s first win in the event since 3×3 basketball was introduced into the Commonwealth Games programme, placing the team among the early history makers at Glasgow 2026.
The Nigerian players displayed determination and composure throughout the contest, recovering from intense moments of pressure to maintain control and complete the game with a four point advantage.
The 3×3 format, which is played on a half court with three players on each side, has continued to gain global popularity because of its fast pace, physicality and shorter match duration compared with traditional basketball.
Nigeria’s success adds to a strong opening for the country at the Glasgow Games, following impressive performances in other events, including para powerlifting where Esther Nworgu won Nigeria’s first gold medal of the competition after setting a Games record.
The Commonwealth Games organisers have highlighted the growth of new sporting disciplines at Glasgow 2026, with athletes competing across a range of events as countries battle for medals and historic achievements.
For Team Nigeria, the 3×3 basketball triumph provides a major confidence boost as the competition continues, with the team hoping to build on the landmark victory and make a deeper run in the tournament.
