Pirlo Set To Take Charge Of Italy As Azzurri Begin Fresh Era

Italy football legend Andrea Pirlo has agreed to become the new head coach of the national team, with reports indicating that he has accepted a long term project aimed at rebuilding the Azzurri ahead of future international competitions.

The former World Cup winner emerged as Italy’s preferred choice after the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) ended its pursuit of Manchester City legend Pep Guardiola, who reportedly declined the opportunity to take charge of the national team.

Reports from Italy indicate that Pirlo is expected to sign a four year contract that will run through to 2030, as the federation seeks stability and a long term plan following a difficult period for the national side.

The appointment is expected to mark a new chapter for the Azzurri, who have struggled in recent years after missing successive World Cups and facing pressure to rebuild both the senior team and the youth development structure.

Pirlo, 47, returns to the national setup as one of Italy’s greatest football figures, having played a key role in the country’s 2006 FIFA World Cup triumph and earning 116 international caps during his decorated career.

The former midfielder, known for his vision, passing ability and tactical intelligence during his playing days, began his coaching career with Juventus before later managing clubs including Fatih Karagümrük, Sampdoria and Dubai United.

Italian football officials are reportedly backing Pirlo because of his connection with a new technical direction being developed by figures such as Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, who are seeking to introduce a fresh football philosophy within the national team.

The decision to turn to Pirlo came after attempts to appoint Guardiola failed, with reports stating that the Spanish coach rejected Italy’s offer despite talks over a possible move to lead the Azzurri revival.

Pirlo’s immediate task will be restoring confidence in an Italian team that has endured a challenging period and ensuring the country returns to the biggest international stages after recent disappointments.

Although the agreement has been widely reported, the FIGC has not yet made an official announcement as formal procedures are still expected to be completed before Pirlo’s appointment is confirmed.

The move represents a major gamble on a familiar Italian football icon, with supporters hoping Pirlo can transfer the calmness, creativity and winning mentality he displayed as a player into his new role as national team coach.
