Tinubu Makes Fresh Appeal To Diaspora Doctors, Says ‘Home Remains Home’

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian medical professionals living abroad to consider returning home and contributing their expertise to the development of the country’s healthcare sector, stressing that Nigeria needs the skills and experience of its citizens in the diaspora.
Tinubu made the appeal while addressing Nigerian health workers abroad, urging them to see opportunities in Nigeria and support ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s health system.
The President said his own journey as a Nigerian who spent years outside the country before returning to contribute to national development showed that home remains the ultimate place to make lasting impact.
Tinubu acknowledged the important roles Nigerian doctors, nurses and other health professionals play globally, noting that many of them have acquired valuable knowledge and experience that can help transform healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
He said his administration was committed to creating an environment where professionals could return and contribute meaningfully, pointing to ongoing reforms aimed at improving infrastructure, investment and opportunities across sectors.
The President’s appeal comes amid concerns over the continued migration of Nigerian health workers to countries with better working conditions, a trend popularly referred to as brain drain.
Nigeria has faced significant challenges in retaining medical personnel, with many doctors and healthcare professionals relocating to countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and other developed nations in search of better pay, improved facilities and stronger career opportunities.
Tinubu said reversing the trend requires collaboration between government and Nigerians abroad, adding that diaspora professionals have a role to play in rebuilding critical sectors of the economy.
The President also encouraged Nigerians abroad to explore opportunities for investment, partnerships and knowledge transfer, stressing that their contributions could accelerate national growth.
The Federal Government has in recent months introduced initiatives aimed at engaging diaspora professionals and attracting investment from Nigerians living outside the country, particularly in healthcare, technology and education.
Tinubu maintained that Nigeria’s development requires the collective efforts of citizens at home and abroad, urging diaspora health workers to view returning home not only as a sacrifice but also as an opportunity to help shape the country’s future.
