WAEC Warns Nigerians Over Fake List Of Schools Linked To Withheld Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a viral list circulating on social media that claimed 50 schools had their 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results withheld over alleged examination malpractice.
The examination body described the circulating document as fake, urging candidates, parents and members of the public to disregard the information and rely only on official communication channels for updates regarding examination results.
The fake list, which spread widely across social media platforms, purportedly contained names of secondary schools whose candidates’ results were allegedly withheld because of irregularities during the conduct of the examination.
WAEC said it was not responsible for the publication and distribution of the document, stressing that any authentic information regarding withheld results or examination sanctions would come directly from the council.
The clarification comes amid growing concerns among candidates and parents following the release of WASSCE results and reports that some candidates’ results were withheld pending investigations into suspected examination malpractice.
WAEC had earlier explained that results of some candidates could be withheld where there are cases of suspected malpractice, including irregularities detected during examinations, but such cases are subjected to investigation before final decisions are made.
The council has continued to warn the public against fake notices and unofficial publications capable of causing unnecessary panic among students who sat for the examination.
WAEC advised candidates whose results were genuinely affected by examination-related issues to use the official complaints and representation channels provided by the council rather than relying on unverified information online.
The examination body reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the WASSCE process while ensuring that genuine cases of malpractice are handled through established procedures.
Parents and candidates have therefore been advised to verify any information about withheld results through WAEC’s official platforms to avoid falling victim to misleading reports circulating online.
