Okpebholo Defends Appointment of 4,000 SAs, Says Governance Must Reach Grassroots

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has dismissed concerns over the appointment of 4,000 Special Assistants (SAs), describing the move as part of his administration’s effort to take governance closer to the people.
The governor spoke on Monday while meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) members from the 18 local government areas of the state at the Government House in Benin City.
In a statement by his media aide, Patrick Ebojele, Okpebholo thanked party members for their support and called for unity within the APC.
He said the appointments were not about him personally but a way of ensuring that party members and people at the grassroots participate in governance.
“Appointing 4,000 SAs is not an issue at all because we all work for this victory. The victory does not belong to Okpebholo alone and I thank party members for their support. So we are taking the governance to the grassroots, so that whatever is from the top, will also go down to the bottom,” the governor said.
Okpebholo added that his administration would continue to strengthen the APC and ensure that opportunities reach communities across the state.
Earlier, APC Chairman in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, commended the governor for repositioning the party and creating opportunities for members to contribute to governance.
Tenebe said the administration had approved the appointment of 25 Special Assistants in each of the 192 wards across the state, with the process aimed at ensuring wider participation at the grassroots.
He explained that the meeting with ward chairmen and party members was organised to communicate the guidelines for selecting nominees for the appointments.
“In his magnanimity, the governor has decided to appoint 25 SAs in each of the wards in 192 wards across the state. And that is the reason why we decided to invite ward chairmen and members to this meeting so we can tell you the criteria to select these people that will benefit from this appointment,” Tenebe said.
The APC chairman added that a committee had been set up to work with the wards, ensure compliance with the guidelines and forward qualified nominees to the party headquarters in Benin City.
The meeting was attended by members of the APC State Working Committee, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, Chief of Staff to the Governor and other party leaders.
