US Flags Nigeria’s Fiscal Transparency Failure

Nigeria has failed to meet the U.S. Department of State’s minimum fiscal transparency requirements for the second consecutive year, with the report stating that the country recorded no significant improvement in public financial management in 2025.

The finding was contained in the 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report released on Tuesday, which assessed 139 governments and the Palestinian Authority.

According to the report, 73 governments met the minimum standards, while 67 fell short.

Of those that failed, 14 made significant progress, but 53 countries, including Nigeria, recorded no progress.

The assessment was based on information gathered by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, other federal agencies, international organisations and civil society groups between January 1 and December 31, 2025.

The report comes amid concerns over budget implementation in Nigeria, where the Federal Government is currently managing three budgets covering 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Reacting to the report, the Presidency said transparency, accountability and effective public financial management remain key priorities of the administration.
