Hungary’s Prime Minister Criticizes Orbán, Labels Russia as Security Threat

Hungary’s Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, has criticized his predecessor Viktor Orbán, accusing him of neglecting domestic issues while prioritizing foreign political matters.
In a statement following his electoral win, Magyar pledged that his administration would avoid interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and called on foreign governments to adopt the same stance towards Hungary.
He described Orbán’s leadership approach as a “five-dimensional chess game” and suggested that this strategy may have played a role in Orbán’s electoral defeat, pointing out that Orbán often discussed matters concerning Ukraine, Russia, Iran, and even the US presidential election.
Mocking Orbán, Magyar joked that if his predecessor were woken from sleep, “he would have said he won the US presidential election, not Donald Trump.”
On foreign policy, Magyar criticized Russia, stating that the Russian state poses a security threat to Europe, drawing from Hungary’s historical experiences with Moscow.
While advocating for diversification in Hungary’s relationship with Russia, Magyar clarified that Hungary would not completely sever ties with Moscow, adding that he opposed Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union, calling it “absurd” for a country at war to join the bloc.
Magyar confirmed he would not reach out to Vladimir Putin or Donald Trump but would respond if contacted.
In response, Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, declined to comment directly on Magyar’s remarks but reiterated that Moscow is open to building relations with Hungary’s new government based on how it defines its national interests.
Polity Reporters will continue to follow Hungary’s evolving foreign policy under Magyar’s leadership.
