Bala Mohammed’s APC Defection Plan Falls Apart Over Power-Sharing Dispute

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed’s planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has collapsed after both parties failed to agree on a power-sharing formula.

Talks between the governor, his Turaki-led PDP faction, and the APC leadership ended in a deadlock after the APC rejected a proposed 60–40 formula for controlling the state’s party structure.

Governor Mohammed and his supporters now plan to explore alliances with other political parties, considering fresh options for a possible defection from the ward to the state level.

Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in Bauchi, Sama’ila Burga, addressed the press on Saturday, stating that the APC had shown no willingness to accommodate the PDP structure and the state government.

Burga revealed that the APC had initiated the discussions through Governor Mohammed, with the party’s national leadership and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, personally visiting Bauchi to persuade the governor to join.

He explained that the negotiations collapsed because the APC refused to accept the 60–40 power-sharing formula, a structure reportedly used in similar defections by governors in other states.

“This is how it has been done in other states where governors defected to APC, but the APC rejected this formula, and we have closed that discussion,” Burga said.

He emphasized that a government bringing its structure from the ward level to the state could not be expected to not have control of the party.

The press conference was held at the request of Governor Bala Mohammed, who led the discussions.

After consulting with stakeholders, the PDP faction decided to end the talks with the APC.

Burga stated that after careful consideration, it became clear the APC had not accepted the collective conditions for the political realignment, and the discussions were officially terminated.

While the PDP faction appreciated the APC’s outreach, the process has now been concluded.

The PDP in Bauchi, in consultation with Governor Mohammed and other key stakeholders, is now actively exploring alternative political options outside the APC to determine the best path forward for the people of Bauchi.
