Obasanjo Slams Tinubu, Says Government Without Security Has No Right to Exist

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s government, accusing it of failing to protect Nigerian citizens, and stating that any government unable to provide security “has no right to exist.”
Obasanjo made the statements during an interview on News Central, where he condemned the escalating violence, abductions, and killings that have plagued various regions of the country.
“The government that cannot ensure the safety and security of its citizens has no right to continue,” he remarked, emphasizing that the core responsibility of any government is to safeguard its people.
He also expressed alarm over the rise in kidnappings and deaths, stressing that ensuring the safety of lives and property should be a government’s foremost priority.
In addition to his security concerns, Obasanjo criticized the National Assembly members, alleging that they have no constitutional authority to set their own salaries and allowances.
“The elected members of our National Assembly do not have the right to determine their own pay. This should be handled by the Revenue Mobilization and Allocation Commission, not by them,” he argued.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions on governance, the security crisis, and accountability, as political dynamics shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political analysts believe Obasanjo’s comments add to the growing scrutiny over the federal government’s handling of security issues and institutional reforms.
