Makinde: No Room for Religious Division in Oyo

April 29, 2026 — Ibadan, Oyo State — Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, reassured the people of the state on Wednesday that religion will not divide them.
He made this statement while bidding farewell to pilgrims intending to perform the 2026 Hajj at the state Hajj Camp in Olodo, Ibadan.
The governor called for unity, emphasizing that the people of Oyo are one and will always remain united.
Makinde urged the intending pilgrims to pray for God’s guidance in selecting the next leaders who will carry on the work of his administration after 2027.
He asked the pilgrims to pray for the state and Nigeria as the election period approaches.
Makinde also encouraged them to be good ambassadors of the state during their pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
He said, “In Oyo State, we are all one. We won’t allow religion to divide us. I charge the intending pilgrims to pray for our state and country when you get to the Holy Land.”
Makinde also spoke about the importance of making wise choices in the upcoming elections, stating that the next leader must continue the progress made in the state.
He emphasized that, despite discussions around the Muslim candidature for his successor, Oyo State must not be swayed by religion.
“We must stay united. The progress of Oyo is what is important to us,” Makinde added.
Makinde reassured that the state has always embraced religious diversity peacefully, pointing out that religion has never been a divisive factor in the state.
The governor also responded to some requests from the board, pledging to complete the mosque construction and donate two buses — one for the use of the board and another for the ease of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
He praised the state’s pilgrims for always representing Oyo well, stating, “Our pilgrims have always been good ambassadors of the state.”
Earlier, Wahab Atere, Chairman of the state Pilgrims Welfare Board, informed the gathering that 1,036 pilgrims from Oyo State would perform the Hajj.
Atere thanked Governor Makinde for his continuous support to the Muslim community and for making the necessary arrangements for the pilgrimage.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal and former Speaker Monsurat Sunmonu, who thanked the governor for his unwavering support to the Muslim community.
The event was attended by dignitaries including the Secretary to the State Government, Musibau Babatunde, and the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Abdulganiyu Agbotomokekere, among others.
