Ogun APC Members Protest Imposition, Demand Primaries

April 29, 2026Abeokuta

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ijebu East Local Government Area staged a protest at the Governor’s Office in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, rejecting attempts to impose candidates for the House of Representatives and House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections.

The protesters called for a credible primary election process to determine the party’s candidates, in line with existing zoning arrangements for the federal constituency.

They expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged marginalisation of Ijebu East in the distribution of political offices within the constituency, which also includes Ijebu North and Ogun Waterside.

Some of the protesters claimed that the House of Representatives seat has been held by candidates from Ijebu North for over a decade, and warned that any attempt to extend this dominance would be resisted.

Adewale Adeboye, also known as Jarrow, spoke during the protest, stressing the need for fairness in the selection of candidates.

“For about 12 years now, the House of Representatives has been occupied by the Ijebu North Local Government,” Adeboye said, adding, “There are indications it may be extended to 16 years. That is not acceptable to us. It is our turn, and that must be respected.”

He further cautioned the party leadership against imposing candidates, citing the loss of electoral support in the past due to similar actions.

“We lost in the past because candidates were imposed on us. We don’t want a repeat of that. Let the people decide. Let there be primaries where consensus fails,” he said, stressing that this aligns with the party’s constitution.

Adeboye also raised concerns over alleged attempts to impose a candidate for the House of Assembly seat and demanded that both positions reflect equity, competence, and broad acceptance.

Oluwatoyin Taiwo, Chief of Staff to the Governor, responded on behalf of the government, urging party members to remain calm and adhere to the party’s constitutional guidelines.

“I have listened to your concerns, and as party members, you should understand that there are established procedures for selecting candidates,” Taiwo said, adding, “The party constitution is clear on this, and decisions are not made arbitrarily.”

Taiwo dismissed the allegations as unverified and advised members to rely on credible sources when engaging with party structures, instead of resorting to protests.

“You must be sure of your sources. Not everything you hear is accurate. However, your concerns have been noted, and I can assure you they will be communicated to the governor,” he added.

The protesters, despite this, remained firm, insisting that their action was necessary to bring attention to what they called ongoing political manoeuvres.

“We just want a fair process that allows party members to choose their candidates. That is the only way forward,” Adeboye said.
