INEC Schedules June 20 for Bye-Elections in Six States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled bye-elections for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

The elections will fill vacant legislative positions in six states: Kebbi, Kano, Ondo, Rivers, Nasarawa, and Enugu.

Four senatorial seats are up for grabs.

The Ondo seat was vacated by Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim, who is now Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

The Rivers seat was made vacant due to the death of Sen. Barinada Mpigi.

The Nasarawa seat became vacant following the death of Sen. Godiya Akwashika.

The Enugu seat was vacated due to the death of Sen. Okey Ezea.

A House of Representatives seat in Kano State will also be filled.

A State House of Assembly seat in Kebbi State is also part of the bye-elections.

These polls will be held on the same date as the Ekiti State governorship election.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan made the announcement during the swearing-in of a new National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (rtd.).

Prof. Amupitan said, “We are going into some off-cycle elections very soon. The Ekiti State Governorship Election is scheduled for June 20, 2026. On the same date, the Commission will conduct bye-elections to fill vacant seats.”

He added, “The senatorial seats declared vacant in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Ondo States will be filled, alongside the Kebbi State House of Assembly seat and the House of Representatives seat in Kano State.”
