Government Pledges to End Killings as Nigerians Retain Right to Self-Defence

The Nigerian government has promised to tackle the rising wave of killings across the country, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, said.
He spoke in response to the recent abduction of teachers and pupils at LA Primary School in Esiele, Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Bwala acknowledged the pain and anger caused by attacks like this but expressed confidence that government action, support from Nigerians, and divine intervention could stop the violence.
He said that while no government can completely stop criminals, working together with citizens would help reduce the threat.
Bwala linked the increase in attacks during election periods to a “crisis economy,” noting that violence tends to rise before elections as some exploit the situation.
He said the spirit and collective will of Nigerians would eventually overcome these challenges.
On self-defence, Bwala stressed that the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to protect themselves and their families.
He said defending oneself and one’s community is a shared responsibility that strengthens collective security.
Bwala explained that anyone threatened in their home has the constitutional right to respond with necessary force.
He also made highlight of the role of community vigilance, pointing to vigilante groups and paramilitary organisations in states such as Borno that provide information to security agencies.
While noting restrictions on certain weapons, he said Nigerians can work with the government to create coordinated self-defence plans.
