‘Where Are the Kidnappers?’ Nigerians Demand Answers After Rescue of Oyo Pupils, Teachers

Nigerians have continued to demand transparency and further details from security authorities following the successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, with many asking for information on the whereabouts of the kidnappers responsible for the attack.
The victims, comprising 39 schoolchildren and six teachers, were rescued after spending several weeks in captivity following an attack on schools in the Oyo community, an incident that generated outrage and concerns over the safety of schools in the country.
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers stormed schools in communities within Orire Local Government Area, including Ahoro Esinele, and other nearby areas, taking away pupils and teachers in a coordinated operation.
Following the attack, security agencies launched rescue operations involving the police, military, civil defence personnel, and other security formations, while the Oyo State Government announced that efforts were ongoing to track the abductors and secure the release of the victims.
The eventual rescue of the victims brought relief to families and residents, but questions have emerged over the fate of the criminal elements behind the operation, with many Nigerians demanding arrests, prosecution, and public accountability.
Reports indicate that some kidnappers were arrested during the rescue operation, while others were reportedly killed during encounters with security forces, although authorities have yet to provide a complete public account of the operation.
Before the rescue, the incident had attracted national attention, with teachers’ groups, community leaders, and residents calling on authorities to intensify efforts to bring the children and teachers back safely.
The attack also occasioned discussions about the spread of kidnapping activities into parts of the South-West, with security analysts warning about the use of forest corridors as hideouts by criminal groups.
Recall that the Oyo State Government, as preventive measures, announced restrictions in different neighbouring local government to restrict the movement of the attackers and prevent them from escaping through forest routes linking the area with neighbouring states.
While celebrating the safe return of the victims, many Nigerians have urged security agencies to ensure that the rescue operation does not end with the release of captives but leads to the dismantling of the networks behind the attack.
Residents and concerned citizens are also asking authorities to provide updates on investigations, the identity of arrested suspects, and measures being taken to prevent similar attacks on schools in the future.
The rescue has therefore brought relief to affected families while keeping alive the public demand for justice, accountability, and enhanced protection for schools and communities across Nigeria.
