Amaechi Pledges to End Federal Character

Rotimi Amaechi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has vowed to pursue key constitutional reforms if elected president in 2027.
Amaechi made this disclosure after appearing before the ADC presidential screening committee in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to the former Minister of Transportation, his administration would put paid to the federal character principle and replace indigeneship with a unified citizenship framework.
“If I become president, I’ll abolish indigeneship and allow only citizenship,” Amaechi said.
He added, “All these I’m West, I’m North, I’m East, and you’re calling people to vote for you based on religion. I’ll abolish federal character. Every Nigerian will be a member of the federation.”
Amaechi’s position, according to political analysts, is bold and would define discussions ahead of the ADC presidential primaries.
Polity Reporters reports that his comments come amid heightened political activity within the ADC as aspirants position themselves ahead of the party’s presidential primaries for the 2027 general elections.
