IBSWLG Councillors Pay Courtesy Visit to SA Security Bibire, Assure Him of Support in Strengthening Security Across Oyo

The councillors representing the 12 wards of Ibadan Southwest Local Government have pledged their firm support to the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Seyi Makinde in his ongoing efforts to strengthen security architecture and ensure sustained peace across Oyo State.

The councillors made this assurance on Thursday while paying him a courtesy visit at his office in Ibadan.

The lawmakers, who were hospitably received by the security expert, congratulated him on his appointment and prayed that God Almighty would continue to grant him wisdom and strength to surpass expectations placed on him by the Governor and the good people of Oyo State.

They also expressed great concern over the present security situation in the state, but noted that they have enough confidence in his capacity to tackle emerging threats and consign troubling developments to history.

The grassroots lawmakers, however, assured him of their readiness to work hand in hand with his office in supporting security initiatives across their respective wards.

In their separate remarks, they deliberated on practical measures to curb insecurity, among which they recommended increased funding for security operations in the state, empowerment of security agencies, provision of employment opportunities to reduce social vices that fuel unrest, and organisation of sensitisation programmes for politicians and relevant stakeholders on identifying and reporting suspicious activities, among several other proposals.

Speaking, the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Adelodun, described Mr. Abayomi Fagbenro-Bibire as a special breed of politician whose contributions to humanity and public service continue to earn him widespread admiration.

He further proposed community meetings across localities in the state as a means of building stronger collaboration among residents, stressing that collective efforts remain crucial in addressing emerging security threats.

He continued, “Improving resources available to local security outfits such as Vigilante groups and Amotekun would further enhance their capacity to tackle insecurity and sustain the fight against crime in the state.”

He also recommended improved welfare packages for security operatives so they can remain motivated and less vulnerable to financial inducements capable of undermining peace and stability in communities.

The lawmaker equally advocated making security work more attractive to prospective candidates, lamenting that many people shy away from joining security agencies due to the meagre financial rewards often associated with the profession despite the enormous risks involved.

Speaking in response, the Special Adviser on Security thanked the councillors for the visit and their assurance of support at the ward level, stressing that security remains the collective responsibility of everyone.

He described their recommendations as welcome developments and assured them that due consideration would be given to the suggestions presented.

The retired United States Navy veteran charged them to continue playing active roles in security matters within their wards, describing them as leaders closest to the people and the first line of defence against insecurity.

He also urged them to intensify sensitization efforts by creating awareness among residents and discouraging the spread of fake news, warning that misinformation has the capacity to create panic and destabilise communities.

He, however, assured them of his commitment to supporting initiatives geared at ensuring that Ibadan Southwest Local Government and Oyo State at large remain peaceful, safe, and conducive for all residents.

The Special Adviser further stated that Governor Seyi Makinde remains unbendingly committed to the primary responsibility for which he was elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, which is the protection of lives and property.

Fagbenro expressed boldly that with ongoing efforts and by God’s grace, the disturbing security challenges being witnessed would soon become a thing of the past.

The highpoint of the visit was the presentation of a commendation letter to Mr. Abayomi Fagbenro-Bibire in recognition of his laudable track record and perpetual dedication to service to humanity.

The productive engagement ended with a group photograph of the councillors and the Special Adviser on Security.
