Wike Links Fubara’s Withdrawal from Guber Race to Agreement

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has explained that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to withdraw from the 2027 governorship race aligns with a political peace agreement aimed at maintaining stability in the state.

Wike made the remarks on Monday while briefing journalists after inspecting infrastructure projects in Abuja. He noted that Fubara’s withdrawal reflects the understandings reached during reconciliation efforts among key political stakeholders in Rivers State.

Fubara recently stepped down from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary, citing consultations with family, allies, and associates, and emphasizing the interest of peace, unity, and stability in the state.

According to Wike, Fubara’s withdrawal was not unexpected, as it adhered to earlier agreements made during peace negotiations. Part of the understanding involved dropping impeachment threats against Fubara on the condition that he would not seek a second term.

Wike also criticized Fubara’s earlier decision to obtain nomination forms, saying it was contrary to the spirit of the agreement and complicated reconciliation efforts.

“I am not surprised that the governor withdrew. He ought not to have collected the form in the first place, because an agreement was reached that the impeachment threat would be dropped, and he would not pursue a second term,” Wike said.

He added that Fubara’s prior actions “didn’t show signs of gentlemanship,” despite several interventions aimed at restoring stability. “But whatever it is, he has withdrawn, and somebody has emerged,” he stated.

Wike expressed confidence in Kingsley Chinda, the new APC candidate, describing him as a capable and suitable choice for the governorship.

“A good product markets itself. Everyone knows that Kingsley Chinda is the material. He is experienced, having served both in the Executive and now in the Legislature. I am sure he was approached by the APC and then given the ticket,” Wike said.
