NBA Urges Makinde to Regulate Influx of People, Okada Riders After School Abductions

The Ibadan branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to take urgent measures to manage the constant influx of people into the state following the abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area last Friday.

In a statement released on Monday by NBA Chairman Ibrahim Lawal, the association also urged the state government to regulate the operations of commercial motorcyclists (Okada) for a defined period to verify the identities of operators.

The NBA emphasized the need for both the Federal and State Governments to intensify efforts to rescue abducted teachers and students from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele.

“This act of barbarism must not be allowed to take root in an environment that was previously peaceful,” the association stated. “The perpetrators and their sponsors must be unmasked. Government at all levels must act decisively to confront this menace. Bland assurances are no longer sufficient. The people of Oyo expect an effective resolution and the safe return of the victims.”

The NBA highlighted the urgency of proactive measures to protect lives and property, warning that failure to act could compel residents to take matters into their own hands.

“The ease with which criminals attack communities and evade justice is alarming. Partisan politics must not lead to inaction, compromises, or cover-ups,” the statement added.

The association specifically recommended strict regulation of commercial motorcyclists and the suspension of operations where necessary to verify operator identities. It also called for thorough combing of forest reserves to remove undesirable elements.

Finally, the NBA urged both federal and state authorities to expedite the rescue of the victims, emphasizing that safeguarding citizens’ welfare is the core responsibility of any government. The association expressed deep concern over the slow pace of government action since the abduction occurred over ten days ago.

“The deafening silence surrounding rescue operations does not inspire confidence. While some operational secrecy is understandable, the prolonged silence is disquieting,” the NBA concluded.
