Julius Abure Credits Peter Obi for Raising Labour Party’s Profile, But Stresses “50-50 Contribution”

Julius Abure, former factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has acknowledged that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, significantly raised its national prominence ahead of the general elections.
In a statement on Tuesday, Abure maintained that while Obi’s entry brought considerable visibility, the Labour Party had already established itself as a credible political force before the former Anambra State governor joined.
Abure said both Obi and the party contributed equally to the successes recorded in the 2023 polls, describing the partnership as a “50-50 contribution.”
“Nigerians were already searching for an alternative political platform,” Abure said, adding that the Labour Party provided a ready and credible structure that attracted Obi and other politicians.
The former chairman highlighted the party’s pre-existing achievements, noting that it had previously produced a governor and several elected public office holders.
He also pointed out that prominent figures such as economist Pat Utomi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti had joined the party before Obi’s arrival.
“There’s no gainsaying the fact that Mr. Peter Obi brought prominence to the Labour Party,” Abure stated.
“But to say very clearly, it is a ’50-50 contribution’. Nigerians were determined to have an alternative political platform, and we created and made the platform available, bringing our own credibility to the party,” he added.
Abure emphasised that the party was far from empty when Obi joined, noting that it had previously produced a governor and other elected office holders.
He continued that even before Peter Obi’s arrival, many prominent Nigerians had already joined the party, making it clear that it was already emerging as a third-force political party in Nigeria.
“Don’t forget that politicians like Pat Utomi, Alex Otti, and other political heavyweights had already joined the party before Peter Obi,” Abure said, while also agreeing that Obi brought prominence that complemented the party’s own structure.
He concluded that the combination of Obi’s candidacy and the party’s foundation resulted in the successes seen in the 2023 general elections.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the Labour Party’s performance in the 2023 elections, where Obi’s candidacy galvanised significant youth and urban support, pushing the party to an impressive third-place finish in the presidential race.
