Gbenga Daniel Blasts Dapo Abiodun Over Claims on 2003, 2023 Elections

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Wednesday addressed Governor Dapo Abiodun’s allegations regarding the 2003 and 2023 elections.

Daniel refuted Abiodun’s claims that he had handed over his political structure to him to help secure his 2003 governorship win.

Abiodun had also alleged that his support played a crucial role in Daniel securing the 2023 Ogun East senatorial ticket and eventual victory.

In a statement made available to the media, Daniel described Abiodun’s claims as an attempt to rewrite history.

He established that his victories in both his gubernatorial and senatorial elections were the result of hard work, extensive campaigns, and a commitment to empowering the people.

Daniel reminded that in 2003, he defeated Abiodun in the PDP governorship primaries by a very significant margin.

He also noted that after winning, he appointed Abiodun as the pioneer Chairman of the Gateway Oil & Gas Committee.

The media team further pointed out that despite Abiodun’s boasting of a strong political structure, his 2015 attempt to represent Ogun East at the Senate failed miserably.

The statement also placed emphasis on Daniel’s immense contributions in Abiodun’s 2019 victory, where he mobilized support despite the intense opposition from then-governor Ibikunle Amosun.

For the 2023 senatorial election, Daniel’s media office asserted that he won on the strength of his name, legacy, and the overwhelming support from the people of Ogun East.

Daniel’s media team rejected Abiodun’s claims that he played a considerable role in Daniel’s victory, calling it false and insulting to the people of Ogun East.

The statement clarified that by the time Abiodun supposedly intervened, the primaries were already nearing conclusion with no frontrunners left to persuade.

The statement added that Daniel’s campaign for the 2023 election was robust, covering all 103 wards in Ogun East, while Abiodun failed to attend any of Daniel’s rallies or campaign events.

It added that despite being invited, Abiodun and his officials were reported to have been instructed to stay away from Gbenga Daniel’s campaign launch in October 2022.

The media team directly challenged Dapo Abiodun, asking what structure he could have handed over when his own political machinery failed in his own ward during the presidential election.

Daniel’s victory, according to INEC records, remains one of the few unchallenged senatorial results in Ogun State, with no petitions or disputes.

The statement affirmed that Daniel’s mandate was earned in the open, at the polls, without the need for backroom arrangements or forced consensus.

It concluded with a call for Governor Abiodun to focus on governance and address public concerns, rather than deflecting blame onto political opponents and media scrutiny.
