“We’ve Heard Your Pain” — Obidient Movement Calls for Calm Amid NDC Primary Fallout

The Obidient Movement, which supports Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged members to remain calm following concerns over the party’s recent nationwide primaries.

In a statement released on Thursday, Yunusa Tanko, the movement’s national coordinator, acknowledged the dissatisfaction among certain members, particularly those who contested in the primaries.

“We are aware of the concerns, reactions, and feelings shared by members of the movement, especially aspirants of the NDC, as well as our supporters across Nigeria and abroad, regarding how the party conducted its recent primaries. We have listened carefully and understand your frustrations. Today, we speak not just as leaders of the movement, but as fellow believers in a shared vision,” Tanko said.

Tanko admitted that the primaries faced some challenges but urged members not to let the results weaken the movement.

“We openly admit that the recent NDC primaries faced certain difficulties. Large-scale internal processes are rarely flawless. We recognize the pain of those who feel wronged. Every aspirant, delegate, and supporter who dedicated time, resources, effort, and hope to this process deserves fairness and respect,” he added.

He also noted that discussions are ongoing to resolve grievances and bring members together.

“We assure all affected parties that thorough and sincere consultations are ongoing at the highest levels of the movement to address these issues, mend divisions, and restore the sense of unity that defines us. These efforts at reconciliation are intentional and meaningful, and they will yield results,” Tanko said.

Tanko appealed to aspirants and stakeholders to trust the process, emphasizing that justice and fairness are central to the movement.

“No legitimate grievance will be ignored. To our brothers and sisters who feel hurt, frustrated, or let down at this time, we say this with care: exercise patience and strategic restraint. The wisest among us understand that not every dispute requires public confrontation, and not every grievance must be displayed openly. This is a moment for careful thought and composure,” he continued.

He warned that internal conflicts could undermine the movement’s larger political objectives ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We can voice disagreements without destroying relationships. We can raise concerns without creating disorder. We can defend our values without severing the connections we will need on the path to 2027. History repeatedly shows that movements fail more from internal strife than from external opposition. We must avoid repeating such mistakes,” Tanko said.

Tanko stressed that the movement’s focus remains firmly on Obi’s 2027 presidential campaign rather than online arguments.

“There should be no misunderstanding about our priorities. Our aim is not to win social media arguments or internal battles. Our goal is the Presidency of Nigeria in 2027. Our mission is too significant, and Nigerians are counting on us too much, to allow ourselves to be distracted,” he concluded.
