Only God Can End Insecurity — Matawalle

Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has said that while government and security agencies are working to tackle insecurity, only God can ultimately bring it to an end in Nigeria.
He made the remarks during an interview with BBC Hausa amid renewed security concerns across parts of the country, including recent school attacks and abductions in Oyo and Borno states.
Between May 15 and 17, gunmen reportedly invaded three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting 39 students and seven teachers, while in Borno State, armed attackers also struck schools in Mussa, Askira-Uba Local Government Area, and reportedly took away 42 pupils.
Describing the incidents as painful, Matawalle said insecurity remains a national challenge that affects all Nigerians regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences.
“It is heartbreaking, and we must all work together to ensure that security agencies and citizens join forces to end insecurity in the country. Insecurity does not discriminate, it can affect anyone,” he said.
The minister urged political actors to avoid turning insecurity into a political weapon, accusing some opposition figures of using the situation to discredit the current administration.
He maintained that the issue should not be politicised, stressing the importance of unity, prayers, and collective support for security agencies in addressing the crisis.
“It is only God that can ultimately end this insecurity, alongside our collective prayers and efforts. It should not be used as a tool for political attacks or to score points,” he said.
Matawalle also alleged that some individuals were circulating old or misleading videos on social media to portray the current administration in a negative light.
He claimed that some of the footage being shared originated from previous administrations or other countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, but were being falsely presented as recent events in Nigeria.
The minister assured Nigerians that security agencies are actively working across the country to combat terrorism and other threats, noting that results may not be immediate.
“Our security forces are working tirelessly nationwide, and directives have been given to deal decisively with criminals, although this challenge cannot be resolved overnight,” he said.
He further stated that insecurity is a global problem, pointing out that even advanced nations continue to face security threats.
Matawalle called on Nigerians to continue supporting security operations and to remain prayerful as government efforts to restore stability continue.
