Reps to Hold Emergency Sitting as Senate Extends 2025 Budget Implementation to September 2026

The House of Representatives is expected to hold an emergency sitting on Monday, June 15, 2026, to consider the extension of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, following a similar decision earlier taken by the Senate.

The Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi, confirmed the development in a memorandum sent to members of the Green Chamber, notifying them of the special plenary scheduled for 11:00 a.m.

“The emergency sitting is convened in line with Order Five, Rule 2(2) of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives,” the memo stated.

The proposed session comes after the Senate approved an extension of the implementation period of the 2025 budget until September 30, 2026, to allow for the completion of ongoing capital projects across the country.

The extension represents the second adjustment to the lifespan of the 2025 budget within the fiscal year.

During the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier proposed that implementation of the 2025 budget would end on March 31, 2026, to allow for the full rollout of the new fiscal plan, but lawmakers later extended the deadline to June 30, 2026.

Leading the debate in the Senate, Chief Whip Tahir Monguno said the extension was necessary due to delays in procurement processes and the slow pace of execution of capital projects under the budget.

He explained that the additional time would enable ministries, departments and agencies to complete ongoing infrastructure projects already captured in the appropriation framework.

Senators who supported the motion, including Solomon Adeola and Victor Umeh, said the extension would ensure proper value for public funds and prevent abandonment of critical projects.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio ruled in favour of the proposal, describing it as being in the national interest and essential for completing priority infrastructure projects.

The decision allows federal agencies and contractors handling capital projects under the 2025 budget to continue implementation until September 30, 2026.
