Obi will miss 2027 ballot – Rochas

Nigerian businessman and social media commentator Uche Rochas has claimed that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may not appear on the ballot in the 2027 general election following a Federal High Court ruling affecting the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Rochas made the assertion in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, reacting to a judgment delivered by the Federal High Court in Lokoja which set aside its earlier decision directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.

The court, presided over by Justice Isah Dashen, ruled that its earlier judgment was flawed because it affected the rights of the Peace Movement Party (PMP), which was not joined in the suit despite claiming ownership of the logo used by the NDC.

The ruling has generated political reactions, with some opposition voices alleging it could weaken emerging political platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.

Supporters of Peter Obi have also expressed concern, saying the development will affect the structure and future participation of the NDC in the electoral process.

In his post, Rochas wrote: “Peter Obi will not be on any ballot in the 2027 general election. We will certainly miss him, and the noise.”

He added: “I also feel sorry for those he deceived into spending their time and money on the NDC. Now, there will be no refunds.”

As of the time of filing this report, the Independent National Electoral Commission has not issued a final position on the status of the NDC or its eligibility for future elections.
