FUOYE Ex SUG President Says Tiwa Savage’s Scandal Inspired Him After Explicit Video Leak

Former President of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Students’ Union Government, James Adio, has revealed that singer Tiwa Savage’s experience with a leaked private tape inspired him to remain strong when his own explicit video surfaced online.

Adio disclosed this during an interview with Tiamiyu Adebayo TV on Thursday, where he said he refused to give in to pressure despite the criticism and backlash that followed the circulation of the video.

The former student leader compared his experience with that of Afrobeats singer Tiwa Savage, whose private video was leaked in 2021, saying her ability to overcome the situation encouraged him to believe that he could also move past the challenge.

“Tiwa Savage, the popular musician, faced something like this… in fact, I am not half of where she was… but she overcame,” he said.

Adio added: “I have not come this far to give up.”

He explained that he was initially unaware of the reactions generated online after the video surfaced, saying he only became aware of the public response after checking his phone later that day.

“Going through my phone that day when it happened, I was not even aware of what people were saying online. But when I came online and read through some comments, I was like, ah, if I actually give up, I have failed the people because they actually believe in me,” he said.

The former SUG president said the support he received from former students and other well-wishers helped him remain determined during the difficult period.

Reflecting on his time as a student leader, Adio described his election as a challenging process, noting that he contested against 13 other candidates before emerging victorious.

“It was a very tough battle. I had 13 opposition. I have seen life to an extent. A lot of people will be looking for your downfall and that you don’t deserve it. I am young, but I have seen a lot,” he stated.

He attributed the support he received from students after the controversy to the impact of his leadership while in office, saying his previous efforts on behalf of students influenced their response.

“We fought for our students… that’s why when it came out, a lot of students came out to fight,” he added.

Adio also identified his family, particularly his mother, as a major source of encouragement, saying their support gave him the strength to continue despite the challenges.

“The number one thing that gave me the push is my mom, my family. I was even thinking my family was going to rebuke me, but it didn’t happen, and that gave me the push I needed,” he said.

The former student leader had earlier made headlines in June after FUOYE suspended him over allegations of financial extortion involving newly admitted students, with the institution alleging that about ₦700,000 in unauthorised levies was linked to his account.

Shortly after his suspension, an explicit private video allegedly involving Adio circulated online, leading to widespread reactions and attracting the attention of the National Association of Nigerian Students.

Following the development, the university suspended two students over allegations of cyberbullying and blackmail connected to the distribution of the video.

Despite the controversies, Adio has since completed his studies and formally signed out from the university.
