Oyo rescue: Rep urges Tinubu to honour security chiefs

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to confer national honours on Nigeria’s security chiefs following the successful rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Agbese said the recognition would serve as an appreciation of the commitment, professionalism and coordination displayed by security agencies during the operation that led to the safe recovery of the victims after weeks in captivity.
The lawmaker, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in Benue State, made the call while reacting to the rescue of the Oyo schoolchildren and teachers abducted from schools in the Oriire axis of the state.
The victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed attackers invaded communities in Oriire Local Government Area, including Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and surrounding areas, taking pupils, students and teachers from schools in the area.
The incident triggered nationwide concern, with President Tinubu directing security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Following weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated operations involving various security agencies, the abducted pupils and teachers were eventually rescued, with the development attracting commendations from political leaders and security stakeholders.
Agbese specifically praised President Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, service chiefs, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and other security agencies involved in the operation.
He described the rescue as a demonstration of improved inter-agency collaboration and a sign that the government was determined to confront terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
The lawmaker said honouring the security chiefs would not only recognise their efforts but also motivate other officers working in difficult environments to remain committed to protecting Nigerians.
The Oyo rescue operation came amid heightened concerns over attacks on schools and vulnerable communities across Nigeria, with the Federal Government previously deploying additional measures, including the approval of forest guards and specialised rescue efforts to strengthen security in affected areas.
President Tinubu had earlier stated that no ransom was paid and no concession was made in securing the release of the abducted Oyo pupils and teachers, describing the operation as a success for the country’s security forces.
Agbese said the successful operation had restored confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture and demonstrated that criminal groups would not be allowed to dictate the security situation of the country.
He urged the Federal Government to sustain the momentum by strengthening intelligence-led operations, improving community security structures and ensuring that those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
