Oyo Launches Climate Literacy Drive, Equips Teachers to Lead Environmental Awareness in Schools

The Oyo State Government has intensified its climate action efforts through programmes aimed at strengthening environmental education and building climate resilience across the state.

The initiative focuses on improving climate literacy among educators and government stakeholders, with the aim of ensuring that environmental awareness becomes part of learning and community development efforts in Oyo State.

As part of the broader climate education push, stakeholders have continued to train teachers on climate change, sustainability, green skills and ways to introduce environmental consciousness into schools. One of such initiatives saw teachers from secondary schools in Oyo State receive capacity building on climate education and green careers.

The EcoChampions programme, organised by EcoSmart Club with support from SOS Children’s Villages, trained 52 teachers from 28 secondary schools in Oyo State on climate education, recycling, upcycling and environmental advocacy.

The Oyo State Government has also trained Climate Change Desk Officers drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Authorities as part of efforts to strengthen climate governance and promote grassroots action.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, stakeholders noted that climate literacy is essential in preparing students to understand environmental challenges such as flooding, pollution, rising temperatures and other effects of climate change.

The programme is expected to empower teachers to serve as climate advocates in their schools by passing environmental knowledge to students and encouraging sustainable practices within communities.

The government’s climate initiatives align with efforts to promote cleaner environments, improve climate resilience and position Oyo State as a leader in environmental sustainability.

Experts have repeatedly stressed the need to equip teachers with climate knowledge, noting that educators play a major role in shaping students’ understanding of climate change and possible solutions.

The development comes amid increasing calls for climate education to be integrated into school systems across Nigeria, as young people are considered critical stakeholders in addressing future environmental challenges
