Tinubu Reshapes Army With Major Expansion

President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and authorised the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve military operations nationwide.

The approval, announced by the Presidency, is aimed at enhancing the Army’s operational capacity, improving command and control, strengthening border security and boosting counter insurgency operations against terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

The new structure will see the Nigerian Army increase its formations across the country, with the expansion designed to improve troop deployment, reduce response time and ensure a stronger military presence in critical security zones.

The Presidency said the implementation of the restructuring programme would be carried out in two phases, with the first phase expected to be completed by September 2026 and the second phase concluded by December 2026.

The recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel is expected to provide the Army with more manpower to tackle emerging security challenges, including insurgency, kidnapping, violent crimes and threats to critical national infrastructure.

The move comes as the Nigerian Army continues to intensify operations against terrorist groups, bandits and other criminal networks across different parts of the country, with security agencies facing increasing demands to improve their response capabilities.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, had earlier disclosed plans to increase manpower and establish additional operational units as part of efforts to strengthen the Army’s ability to respond quickly to security threats.

Security experts have long called for increased military capacity, better equipment and improved troop deployment strategies, arguing that Nigeria’s security challenges require a stronger and more adaptable force structure.

The latest approval represents one of the major reforms under the Tinubu administration’s efforts to reposition the armed forces and provide additional support for ongoing security operations across the country.
