Army Expansion: NGF Backs Tinubu’s Move To Boost Security Operations

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has praised President Bola Tinubu’s approval of new Nigerian Army divisions and the recruitment of additional personnel, describing the move as a major step towards strengthening counterterrorism operations and improving national security.
The forum said the expansion of the Army’s operational structure would enhance the military’s capacity to respond to emerging security threats and provide better protection for communities across the country.
President Tinubu had recently approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions and authorised the recruitment of 28,000 personnel as part of efforts to increase manpower, decentralise command and improve security coverage.
The NGF, in a statement, said the decision demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing insecurity through stronger military capabilities and improved operational effectiveness.
The governors noted that the creation of additional divisions would allow the Army to establish a wider presence in strategic locations, enabling faster response to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
They also commended ongoing reforms within the security sector, stressing that increased manpower and improved coordination among security agencies were critical to tackling the complex threats facing the nation.
The forum said state governments remained committed to working with the Federal Government and security agencies to support initiatives aimed at restoring peace and stability across Nigeria.
Security experts have long argued that expanding military formations and increasing personnel could improve intelligence gathering, troop deployment and rapid intervention, especially in areas affected by persistent attacks.
The latest Army expansion comes amid continued efforts by the Tinubu administration to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through improved equipment, recruitment, intelligence coordination and collaboration between federal and state authorities.
The NGF expressed optimism that the new measures would contribute significantly to ongoing counterterrorism campaigns and help create a safer environment for citizens nationwide.
