Ningi Tells Akpabio: Senate Is Not Executive Arm

Bauchi Central Senator, Abdul Ningi, has warned Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the National Assembly is not an extension of the Executive, amid concerns over government agencies’ repeated failure to honour invitations from lawmakers.
Ningi made the remarks while reacting to several instances where ministries, departments and agencies have ignored summons issued by Senate committees, stressing that the legislature should not continue appealing to institutions to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.
“The Senate is not a ministerial position. We can no longer continue pleading with government agencies to perform their constitutional obligation,” Ningi said.
The lawmaker maintained that members of the National Assembly are elected representatives of the people and should be accorded the same respect given to other public officeholders.
He outlined possible steps the Senate could take against agencies that fail to appear before committees, noting that one committee had already documented the alleged violations.
According to Ningi, the next action would be for the Senate to issue a final warning directing the affected agencies to honour their invitations.
He added that if the agencies still refuse to comply, the matter would be formally presented to the Senate for further legislative action.
Ningi said the legislature could eventually notify President Bola Tinubu, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, about the failure of government officials under his administration to comply with constitutional obligations.
“The legislature, as we are now, can write to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, informing him of this infraction by his leadership,” he said.
The senator’s comments come amid renewed concerns among lawmakers over the ability of the National Assembly to enforce compliance with its oversight responsibilities.
