US Sounds Alarm Over AI Passport Photos, Warns Nigerian Visa Applicants

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned visa applicants against submitting passport photographs altered with artificial intelligence tools or digital editing software, stating that such images will not be accepted during the visa application process.

The warning was issued through the mission’s official communication channels, where applicants were advised to submit recent photographs that accurately represent their real appearance without filters, enhancements or computer-generated modifications.

The US Mission stressed that passport photos used for visa applications must be taken within the required period and should allow consular officers and border officials to clearly identify the applicant.

According to the advisory, applicants who submit digitally enhanced or AI-generated passport images risk significant delays in the processing of their visa applications because such photographs do not meet the required standards.

The development comes amid growing concerns globally over the misuse of artificial intelligence technology to create altered identities, fake documents and manipulated images capable of undermining security checks.

US immigration authorities rely heavily on accurate facial images for identity verification, making unedited photographs an important requirement in preventing impersonation and fraudulent applications.

The mission urged Nigerian applicants to follow the official photograph guidelines provided by the US Department of State and avoid relying on photo editing applications or artificial intelligence services that modify facial features.

The warning adds to previous reminders by US authorities urging visa applicants to provide truthful information and genuine documents throughout the application process.

The US Mission advised applicants to ensure that all materials submitted during visa applications accurately reflect their identity to avoid unnecessary delays or complications.
