Nigeria Worse Under Tinubu Than Abacha Era — Utomi

Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying Nigeria’s current situation is worse than what the country experienced during the regime of late military ruler, General Sani Abacha.

Utomi made the statement during an interview on Nigeria Info 99.3FM, where he reacted to recent concerns raised by Catholic bishops over the state of the nation.

The university don said the position expressed by the bishops reflects the frustrations of many Nigerians who are concerned about the country’s current challenges.

He explained that the Catholic Church adopts a structured approach before making pronouncements on national issues, noting that various bodies, including the Justice, Development and Peace Commission, contribute to discussions before matters are presented to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

“The bishops have had a meeting before they went to see the president. The speech delivered by Cardinal John Onaiyekan generally reflects the collective concerns of the bishops, although individual members may still hold personal opinions,” he said.

Comparing the current administration with the era of General Abacha, Utomi said there was no doubt in his assessment that Nigeria was in a more difficult position today.

“I think we’re in a worse condition than under Abacha. There’s no doubt about it,” he stated.

The political economist attributed some of the country’s present difficulties to what he described as shortcomings in the transition from military rule to democratic governance in 1998.

Utomi argued that the failure to address key structural issues during the transition period contributed to some of the challenges Nigeria continues to face today.
