Makinde Gains Ekiti Backing

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ekiti State have commenced grassroots mobilization for the presidential ambition of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The mobilization exercise was held in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, where PDP and APM members from across the 16 local government areas of the state gathered for an advocacy and awareness programme focused on building support for Makinde’s emergence as Nigeria’s president in 2027.

The programme, tagged “APM Awareness Campaign,” was convened by PDP chieftain Lanre Fajuyi, who said the initiative was driven by the need to rally Nigerians around what she described as credible alternative leadership ahead of the next presidential election.

Fajuyi said Makinde represents the type of leadership Nigerians require at the current period, urging PDP and APM members in Ekiti to begin early grassroots engagement and mobilization to intensify support for his presidential ambition.

She said the movement was focused on sensitising youths, women, artisans and other critical groups across the state on the importance of active participation in the political process and the need to build a strong opposition platform ahead of 2027.

According to her, Nigerians are searching for leadership that will address economic and social challenges while promoting accountable governance and policies that prioritize the welfare of the citizens.

The PDP/APM spokesperson for the South-West, Sanya Atofarati, described the alliance as an effort to preserve multi-party democracy and create a stronger opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atofarati explained that the partnership became necessary due to challenges affecting opposition parties, adding that the alliance would provide an alternative platform for politicians and supporters seeking participation in the 2027 elections.

He said the strength of democracy lies in a working multi-party system, stressing that the PDP and APM collaboration is designed to provide a comprehensive platform for Nigerians who desire a change in political direction.

The APM Vice Chairman in Ekiti State, Remilekun Solola, also described the alliance as a strategic move towards building a formidable opposition structure capable of competing effectively in the 2027 elections.

The development comes amid concrete efforts by APM to expand support for Makinde’s presidential ambition through engagements with opposition groups and political stakeholders across the country.

Makinde, who has served as Oyo State governor since 2019, has been presented by his supporters as a candidate that can provide a different approach to national leadership, with his backers referencing his administration’s unprecedented policies and projects in Oyo State.

However, the political space ahead of the 2027 election remains fluid, with different parties and alliances expected to intensify consultations, mobilisation and coalition-building as preparations gather momentum.
