PDP Leaders Meet Makinde, Urge Overhaul of Nigeria’s Security Architecture After Oyo School Attack

The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Adolphus Wabara, and members of the interim National Working Committee (NWC) under Tanimu Turaki, met with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Monday to call for a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s security architecture.

The meeting followed last Friday’s abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State. Schools affected included Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School, Esiele.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, Turaki said the PDP delegation came to commiserate with the state government and the people of Oyo over the attacks.

He stated, “The leadership of PDP, including members of the NWC and the Board of Trustees, are here to support the government and the people of Oyo in this difficult moment. We recognise the efforts Governor Makinde has made to ensure safety, but the recent attacks are deeply concerning, especially as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.”

Turaki urged the Federal Government to urgently reform the nation’s security structure, describing the current system as ineffective. He stressed that state governors should have greater control over security operations within their states to improve response times and efficiency.

“It is contradictory for a governor to be called the Chief Security Officer of a state while having no direct authority over security agencies. Delays caused by seeking approvals from Abuja can result in avoidable damage,” Turaki explained.

The PDP delegation also called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, emphasizing that communal responsibility is key to addressing insecurity.

Turaki concluded by reassuring the people of Oyo that the measures already being implemented by the state government would help prevent such incidents in the future, and he encouraged continued vigilance and cooperation with authorities.
