BREAKING: Tinubu Sends State Police Amendment Bill to Senate

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has formally transmitted a Constitution Alteration Bill to the Senate seeking approval for the establishment of state police across the country.
The proposal is part of ongoing constitutional reforms aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s security architecture by decentralising policing powers from the federal level to state governments.
According to legislative reports, the bill seeks to amend relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution to allow each state to establish and operate its own police force alongside the existing Nigeria Police Force.
Lawmakers say the reform is intended to improve internal security by enhancing local intelligence gathering, speeding up response to crime, and allowing security agencies to better understand community-level threats.
The bill is currently under consideration in the National Assembly, where it has already enjoyed strong support in earlier stages and has been referred to constitutional review committees for further legislative scrutiny.
If eventually approved by both chambers and ratified by at least two-thirds of state assemblies, the amendment will mark one of the most significant overhauls of Nigeria’s policing system in decades.
