Makinde Faults Double Standards in Handling School Kidnappings, Renews State Police Call

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has criticized what he described as inconsistent standards in assigning responsibility for major school kidnappings in Nigeria, noting that former President Goodluck Jonathan was blamed for the 2014 Chibok abduction while he was held responsible for the recent kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.
Makinde made the remarks after the successful rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area, where he argued that governors are often blamed for security failures despite lacking constitutional control over the military, police, and other security agencies.
The governor recalled that following the Chibok abduction in 2014, the Jonathan administration faced widespread criticism, with demands that the federal government rescue the abducted schoolgirls.
“When Chibok happened, it was the fault of President Jonathan. They went all over the world and asked Jonathan to bring back the children. But when this happened, no—it is the irresponsibility of the state governor and the state government,” Makinde said.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies for their efforts in securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers.
Makinde also renewed his call for constitutional reforms, particularly the creation of state police, arguing that such measures would give governors greater capacity to respond effectively to security challenges within their jurisdictions.
The governor maintained that a review of the country’s security structure remains necessary to enable states play a more active role in protecting lives and property.
