Atiku Urges Tinubu to Suspend Umahi Over Mary Habila’s Death, Demands Independent Investigation

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend the Minister of Works, David Umahi, pending the outcome of an investigation into the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist Mary Habila.
Atiku made the call in a statement released on Saturday, urging the Federal Government to ensure that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
The former Vice President said suspending the minister would help protect the integrity of the investigation and reassure Nigerians that the process would be free from interference.
Habila, a physiotherapist, reportedly died on June 27, 2026, at the residence of the Minister of Works in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where she was said to have been providing medical services.
According to reports, Habila was part of a medical team attending to Umahi before her death occurred under circumstances that have generated public concern and demands for clarity.
Atiku expressed sadness over the incident, describing the death of the young medical professional as a matter that requires a full and impartial investigation to determine what happened.
He argued that public officials must be held accountable and that the position of any individual involved should not prevent authorities from carrying out a credible probe.
The former Vice President said President Tinubu should demonstrate commitment to justice by ensuring that no person, regardless of status, is above investigation when serious allegations or concerns arise.
He also called for the involvement of independent investigators and relevant authorities to examine all aspects of the case, including the events leading to Habila’s death.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has commenced investigation into the incident and has indicated that forensic procedures, including an autopsy, may be necessary to determine the actual cause of death.
The police said the investigation was aimed at uncovering the truth and providing answers to questions surrounding the circumstances of Habila’s death.
Umahi has denied any involvement in wrongdoing and has called for a comprehensive forensic investigation into the matter, insisting that the truth should be established through proper procedures.
The minister has also rejected allegations of foul play, stating that the matter should not be politicised and that due process should be followed.
Atiku’s demand comes amid growing public reactions and calls from political groups and civil society organisations urging authorities to ensure transparency in the investigation.
The former Vice President said the handling of the case would serve as a test of the government’s commitment to accountability, justice and respect for human life.
He urged the President to act swiftly by suspending Umahi while investigations continue, arguing that such a step would strengthen public confidence in the process.
Meanwhile, investigations into Mary Habila’s death remain ongoing as authorities continue efforts to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
