US President Donald Trump has said Venezuela is not yet prepared to hold elections, months after a military operation that removed former President Nicolás Maduro from power, while praising what he described as improvements in the country’s economic situation.

Trump made the comments while discussing Venezuela’s political transition, arguing that the country requires further stabilisation before conducting a credible electoral process.

The US president said holding elections too soon could create further uncertainty, insisting that proper conditions must be established before Venezuelans return to the polls.

Trump also praised developments in Venezuela’s economy, claiming that the country had shown signs of recovery following the political changes and measures introduced after Maduro’s removal.

The remarks come amid continued international debate over Venezuela’s political future, with opposition groups and foreign governments calling for a return to democratic institutions and free elections.

Maduro’s government had faced years of political and economic pressure, including international sanctions, widespread protests and allegations of electoral irregularities from opponents and some foreign observers.

The United States has long maintained a tough stance towards Maduro’s administration, accusing it of undermining democracy and human rights, while Venezuela’s authorities have repeatedly rejected such accusations as foreign interference.

Trump’s comments have renewed questions over Washington’s approach to Venezuela’s transition and the timeline for restoring a fully elected government.

Political analysts say the timing and conditions of any future election will be closely watched, particularly regarding voter participation, security, the role of opposition parties and the credibility of the electoral system.
