SA Security Bibire Commends Safe School Initiative, Assures Team of Makinde’s Support

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security Matters, Abayomi Fagbenro-Bibire, has praised the Safe School Initiative for its laudable efforts across Oyo State and assured the team that the state government will continue to stand by the initiative.

Bibire gave the assurance on Tuesday when members of the initiative visited him to present a detailed report of their activities after touring more than 300 schools across the state.

The team presented the findings from the assessment, including challenges observed in some of the schools and proposed measures to improve safety and security within the school environment.

The meeting followed an earlier engagement with the Oyo Security Adviser, during which the Safe School Initiative introduced the programme and explained its plan to visit schools across the state to assess their security arrangements and identify areas requiring attention.

Commending the team for seeing the assignment through, Bibire said the findings would give the government and relevant security authorities valuable insight as they work to plug security gaps and make schools safer.

This was as he assured the team of Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to the safety of pupils, students and teachers, adding that the administration would continue to back practical measures that would help keep danger at bay in schools across the state.

Bibire said the government would continue to roll up its sleeves to tackle the challenges identified in the report, and that they would have the backing they need to keep a close watch on schools and nip security threats in the bud.

According to him, “the goal is to go further than protecting school premises and create an atmosphere where pupils and students can learn with peace of mind, while parents can rest easy knowing that their children are safe.”

The Special Adviser added that the government would keep all hands on deck with relevant agencies and stakeholders to spot security concerns around schools early and deal with them before they escalate.

He said the lessons from the unfortunate Orire incident must serve as a wake up call for the state and guide its approach to school security, so the same mistake does not happen twice.

Bibire also urged the Safe School Initiative to keep the lines of communication open with schools and relevant stakeholders, assuring the team that the state government would take the issues raised in its report seriously and act where necessary.

He praised Governor Makinde for putting the security and welfare of residents front and centre, saying the governor’s strong backing and investment in security had given the state the solid footing needed to keep Oyo State safe.

The meeting was attended by officials of the Safe School Initiative and key stakeholders working to keep schools out of harm’s way.
