Tinubu Approves Recruitment of 3,252 PTA Teachers Into Federal Service

President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) teachers into the Federal Civil Service as part of efforts to address teacher shortages in Federal Unity Colleges and improve the quality of education across the country.

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Ikharo Attah.

Alausa said priority would be given to verified PTA teachers who have served in Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges for several years, with some having spent nearly 25 years supporting teaching activities without being absorbed into the mainstream public service.

The minister described the approval as a major intervention by the Tinubu administration, noting that it recognises the contributions of thousands of PTA teachers who have sustained academic activities in federal schools despite prolonged uncertainty over their employment status.

“This is a president who cares deeply for Nigeria and for the future of our country.

“The president has approved the recruitment of teachers. Priority will be given to absorbing verified PTA teachers, many of whom have served in our Federal Unity Colleges and Federal Technical Colleges for almost 25 years. This approval provides them with the opportunity to become part of the mainstream public service,” Alausa said.

He explained that the recruitment followed a detailed verification exercise carried out by an inter-ministerial committee, which assessed eligible PTA teachers across Federal Unity Colleges.

According to him, the exercise confirmed the eligibility of 3,252 teachers across different categories, including Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors, paving the way for their regularisation after completing the required statutory procedures.

Alausa said the move represents a significant step under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, as it would help improve the teacher-student ratio in Federal Unity Colleges while recognising teachers who have remained committed to educating Nigerian students despite years of uncertainty.

He added that absorbing experienced PTA teachers into the federal public service would preserve institutional knowledge, strengthen classroom delivery and improve learning outcomes in the colleges.

“The recruitment forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to improve teacher quality and reposition the colleges as centres of academic excellence,” he said.

The minister noted that the Ministry of Education would continue to work with relevant government agencies to complete the remaining processes required for the final approval and implementation of the recruitment in line with public service regulations.

He thanked President Tinubu for approving the exercise, saying the decision demonstrated the government’s commitment to making education a priority in national development.

“Investing in teachers is fundamental to building a stronger education system, as no education system can rise above the quality of its teachers,” Alausa stated.

The minister assured verified PTA teachers that the process would be handled with transparency, fairness and due diligence, while reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to policies that strengthen the teaching profession and improve learning outcomes.

For years, Federal Unity Colleges have relied heavily on PTA-employed teachers to bridge staffing gaps caused by limited recruitment into the federal teaching service. Many of the teachers have worked between 10 and 25 years without permanent appointments, despite carrying out similar classroom responsibilities as government-employed teachers.

Previous administrations and education stakeholders had received several appeals from affected teachers seeking regularisation, arguing that continued dependence on PTA-funded teachers placed financial pressure on parents and left qualified educators facing employment uncertainty.
